    Seasonality differs by boat and sources conflict. Confirm the specific sailing with the operator before you plan an island night out of season.

What closes, and when

  • Archipelago boats to Ulvön and Trysunda are seasonal or reduced outside summer, and the sources disagree about which boat runs year-round. Do not assume a crossing in September without confirming it.
  • Norrtåg publishes separate summer and autumn-winter timetables; the autumn one runs from 10 Aug to 12 Dec. Frequencies change between them.
  • Skuleskogen's trails are not closed in winter, but they are Nordic winter trails: snow, ice and four hours of usable light in December.

Thin timetable

  • DinTur buses are cashless. Card only, no exceptions.
  • SJ tickets are not valid on Norrtåg and the reverse. Two operators, two tickets.
  • Island boats can be out of season while the trains still run. That mismatch is the trap here.

Local rules

  • Allemansrätten is a right with duties: no fires in drought, no camping in sight of a house, nothing left behind.
  • The fishing villages on Ulvön are a few dozen people out of season. Arriving without a booked bed is their problem, not yours.
  • Buy the surströmming in Ulvöhamn if you are going to buy it at all. It is made there.
