Maramureș, Romania
Iza valley, Maramureș
Working villages of the Iza and Mara valleys with eight UNESCO wooden churches. We hold the Place and we do not yet hold the route: the Budapest legs did not verify.
Villages in the Iza and Mara valleys of northern Maramureș — Vadu Izei, Botiza, Ieud, Poienile Izei — where farming, wood-carving and weaving continue, and where several of the wooden churches inscribed by UNESCO in 1999 stand.

Botiza alone has more than sixty registered agritourism guesthouses. That is real tourism at village scale, concentrated in summer and at Easter.

Ground route from Budapest
Route unavailable: we have not verified a ground route to this Place. The sources are below.
What closes, and when
- The wooden churches are working parish churches, not museums. There are no published opening hours to rely on; ask in the village.
- The Budapest to Sighetu Marmației rail routing and the local buses from Sighet or Baia Mare into Vadu Izei and Botiza did not verify against CFR Călători or MÁV this season. We are not publishing times we have not seen.
Thin timetable
- We have not verified a ground route to this Place. It is listed for what it is, not sold.
- Village agritourism in this network is cash-based. Assume no ATM outside Sighetu Marmației and Baia Mare.
Local rules
- The churches are in use. Sunday morning is for the parish.
- Buy the weaving and the carving from the house that made it, at the price the house asks.
- These are farms. Gates, dogs and hay are all working equipment.
