Hautes-Alpes, France
Queyras valley
Ten small communes up the Guil, a working pastoral valley of alpages, hamlets and guarded refuges. Go in June before the alpage traffic, or in September when the huts are still staffed.
Ten communes inside the Parc naturel régional du Queyras — Château-Ville-Vieille, Saint-Véran, Aiguilles, Abriès-Ristolas, Ceillac — with sheep alpages, forestry, guarded refuges and marked trails up the Guil valley.

The park authority names summer as its period of forte fréquentation and regulates dogs, bivouac and drones because of it. June and late September are the same valley without that.
Season window
Jun, then 1 Sep – 15 Oct, then the refuge winter from Jan
October 2026 sits inside the window.

Zou! (Région Sud) / navette gare
Scheduled Zou! buses run mainly in French school holidays; outside them the year-round on-demand navette gare or a taxi is the connection. Tickets to the driver in cash or by cheque.
What closes, and when
- The track between the hamlet of L'Échalp and the Roche Écroulée car park (Abriès-Ristolas) is closed to vehicles 1 Dec – 15 Apr.
- The park's espace géologique at Château-Queyras is listed as currently closed.
- Refuges run seasonal windows rather than year-round: Refuge de la Blanche above Saint-Véran publishes 1 Jan – 12 Apr, open daily. Phone each gardien before relying on a bed.
- High passes into the valley, the Col d'Izoard among them, close for winter. There is no published reopening date; Inforoute05 carries live status.
Thin timetable
- Zou! bus tickets are cash or cheque to the driver. Reduced-mobility places need 36 h notice.
- Outside school holidays the last connection from Montdauphin-Guillestre may be an on-demand navette that must be booked the day before.
Local rules
- The alpages are working pasture. Dogs are restricted inside the park; leave gates as you found them and give flocks and their dogs a wide berth.
- Bivouac and drone use are regulated by the park. Read the park's own reglementation page before you plan a night out.
- Village shops are small and close at midday. Buy for the weekend on Saturday morning.
