Val Grande and the Ossola
The largest wilderness area in the Alps is an hour and a half from Milano Centrale, and it is empty because the last people left, not because nobody has heard of it.
Val Grande national park, established 1992: a former pastoral valley abandoned in the twentieth century, now roadless and walked rather than driven, ringed by inhabited Ossola villages — Vogogna, Trontano, Cossogno, Verbania — that still farm.

A depopulated valley with roadless interior, unguaranteed refuge beds, and one park village, Cicogna, that has no scheduled bus at all. The quiet here is structural, not fashionable.

One rail connection from Paris to Milan. We verify those legs for your dates in the Dossier.
What closes, and when
- Guarded refuges are explicitly not guaranteed open year-round. The park's own instruction is to telephone the gestore before relying on a bed.
- The unguarded bivouacs are open all year, with one exception: Bivacco Pian Vadà must be booked online in advance.
- There is no scheduled public transport from Verbania to Cicogna. The park says so itself. On foot or by car only.
Thin timetable
- No bus to Cicogna. If your plan starts there, your plan starts with a two-hour walk in.
- Inside the park there are no shops, no bars and no reliable water in dry spells. Carry the day out with you.
- Refuge beds must be confirmed by telephone, hut by hut. A website listing is not a reservation.
Local rules
- The hamlets inside the park are ruins that people still own. Do not take stone, wood or fittings.
- The Ossola villages live on farming and quiet weekends. Buy your bread and cheese there rather than carrying a supermarket in.
- Fires are out of the question in a park that burned in living memory.
