Vjosa valley and Përmet

One of Europe's last largely free-flowing rivers, declared a wild river national park in 2023. April to June carries the snowmelt; September and October carry the light.

The Vjosa valley in southern Albania with the small town of Përmet as its hub: farming, thermal springs, small guesthouses and river guiding along a river designated a wild river national park in 2023.

The coast two hours west is full in August. The river valley is not, and the reason is that getting here takes a ferry and a minibus rather than a flight and a transfer.

Ground route from Rome

  1. Leg 1 · Roma Termini → Brindisi Centrale

    approx 6 – 7 h

    Trenitalia

Intercity and regional combinations both work. Arrive at the port with hours, not minutes, in hand.

  2. Leg 2 · Porto di Brindisi → Vlorë

    approx 4 h 30 – 10 h

    Starlines (ferry)

Depends on the vessel. Overnight sailings are common and the last departure can sit near midnight.

  3. Leg 3 · Vlorë → Përmet

    approx 2 – 2 h 30

    Local bus or furgon

Listed departures run roughly 09:30 to 14:00, but furgons leave when full. Treat any printed time as an intention.

One rail connection from Paris to Rome. We verify those legs for your dates in the Dossier.

What closes, and when

  • The Brindisi – Vlorë ferry is seasonal: up to three crossings a day in summer, around four a week for the rest of the year, and some Italy–Albania routes suspend outside roughly January to September. Confirm sailings with Starlines directly before you book anything else.
  • River operators run roughly April to October, with the biggest water April to June on snowmelt.
  • The national park is described by its own authority as a park in the making. Do not expect visitor infrastructure, gates or opening hours.

Thin timetable

  • The ferry thins sharply out of season. Your dates must be checked against Starlines, not an aggregator.
  • Furgons have no fixed timetable. Build a day of slack into any onward connection.
  • Brindisi port is very busy in summer; be there two to three hours ahead of the crossing.
  • Carry cash. Card acceptance up the valley is patchy and the ATMs are in Përmet, not in the villages.

Local rules

  • The river is the point and it is not yet protected in practice. Take nothing out of it and leave nothing in it.
  • Guesthouses are family houses. Agree the price for the room and for dinner when you arrive, in lek.
  • Ask before photographing anyone. This is a working town, not a subject.
